You should update this for the 4000km^3 min in Sept 2011; but generally that at the rate of volume loss winter ice will disappear in 20 or 30 years based on past 10 years. Check out the university of Washington study.

There are several factors that will make this a very non-linear process.

Thanks for you comment.

Unlike prior years, nowadays the ice is very thin and subject to being knocked about and moved all over the place by wind. Winds are increasing both due to lack of ice cover and increasing temperatures and the weakening vortex. The temperature of the ocean water is higher.

I have not seen people comment on winter ice loss, only summer.

Can you provide links to any studies on this?

The rate of daily loss averages 3.5 km^3 over the study period, but 3 times that over the past 10 years.
